David is Professor Emeritus at the University of Victoria and University of Toronto. He has served as Board Chair, Director, and volunteer in Nepal and Africa for Academics Without Borders.
He has received many awards for teaching and innovation, including the National 3M Teaching Fellowship, Canada’s premier university teaching award. As Director of the MBA Program at UVic (2015 – 2020), he led the development and launch of the Weekend MBA and the MBA in Sustainable Innovation.
With decades of expertise in strategy, innovation and marketing, he has published widely in scholarly, managerial, and literary journals. His first book, Design Thinking at Work (2018) used case studies from business and government to explore the strategic application of design thinking. His second, Redesigning Value: a Practical Manifesto for Designers and Organizations (2025), coauthored with designers Chris Ferguson and Paolo Korre, shows how designers and managers can work together to build a better world. His literary writing focuses on the experiences of immigration and homecoming.
He holds a B.Comm from University College Dublin, a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction from University of King’s College, Halifax, NS.
