Chris Smart retired from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in October 2003. He first joined the Centre in 1979 as a Program Officer in the Science and Technology Policy Unit. During his time there, he served as Deputy Director of the Fellowships and Awards Division and of the Social Sciences Division, completing his career as Director of the Special Initiatives Division.
Mr. Smart graduated in General Science from the University of Toronto and later crossed into the social sciences and humanities with a Masters of Science in the History and Social Studies of Science from the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex.
He has served on several boards, including the International Committee of the Ottawa YM-YWCA, Meters for Millions and the Summerset West Community Health Centre. He is currently Past Chair of the Board of Directors of Voluntary Service Overseas Canada (VSO Canada).
